What is Exploratory Guitar?

What is Exploratory Guitar?

Exploratory guitar is a form of musical meditation. A commitment to exploring curiosity, touch, moments, and allowing oneself to remain in an unfixed, and uncertain state of mind for as long as situation and circumstance allows.

Zac first picked up the guitar at age 12, and other than his familial relationships, the electric guitar has been the longest companion in his life. Seeing him through all of the various colours of existence.

Exploratory guitar is a recurring methodology. A means to feel musically active during times of creative block. To find ways to reconnect to what you loved about learning to play music in the first place.

The process is simple: Randomly pick up the guitar, record the session, and play for as long or as short as you feel. Surrender to simply being with the instrument, and connecting with it. There are no ideas or preconceptions. Only the capturing of that place in time.

Two expansive, yet inward seeking improvisations on electric guitar and upright piano. This one has a long and unique history, and we're excited to finally be bringing it to you.

Falling Tide originally came into existence as an improvisation recorded as a birthday gift for a friend.

There is something unique about a creative act, with a specific intention in mind. The experience as a player activates different areas of your soul, and in this case the sense of inhalation, exhalation, and pause, were found to be quite prevalent. These attributes also evoked a sensation of rising and falling, as the title suggests.

The cover photograph was taken in the tiny New Zealand coastal town of Te Araroa. Holly's grandmother was born here, and her life took a path which led far away from her extended family, who she unfortunately did not find the chance to reunite with during her lifetime, although she has been laid to rest in Te Araroa. We continue to return here in her honour as often as we can.
